The Nutrition and Dietetics team are offering most of their service via telephone and remote digital consultations, as for many it is just as effective with the added benefits of being more flexible. However, where it is deemed clinically appropriate, support will be offered face to face in a clinic venue or with you at home.

We kindly ask that all patients wear a face mask at consultations. This is to reduce the risk of infection from COVID-19.

Dietitians are the only qualified health professionals that assess and treat dietary and nutritional problems. Dietitians use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease which they translate into practical guidance to enable individuals to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

Who's it for?

Our Adult Nutrition and Dietetic Service is a city-wide service supporting adults (16 years and older) with a range of nutrition and health needs including:

  • Difficulties with eating and drinking that might result in under nutrition

  • Gut and bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome

  • Low FODMAP diet

  • Diabetes and heart disease

  • Dietary assessment and advice regarding nutritional deficiencies

On referral, the service will offer a consultation at a local clinic or if necessary a home visit (including care homes). The dietitian works with the individual to identify changes that are needed to help them be as healthy as possible, and to support the individual and their family/carers by providing practical and accurate advice and information.

The service also runs education groups for clients with cardiac and respiratory problems as these are shown to be effective in supporting people to improve their lifestyles.

Dietitians also work:

  • As part of the community diabetes service

  • As part of the community neurology and stroke services

The service is provided by registered dietitians with trained support staff and a responsive administration team.

Referrals

Please be aware that we are a referral-only service via a GP or other healthcare professionals, e.g. community matron or district nurse.

Referral information can be found on Leeds Health Pathways website.

  • We asked patients during COVID-19 lockdown how we could improve our service.

Whilst talking to our patients we found out how they would prefer future contacts; 24% preferred telephone, 20% home visit, 15% Clinic, 15% SMS, 11% Webinar, 8% email and 2% other.

Most people were satisfied with the service received, happy to be offered telephone appointment given the circumstances, grateful for advice given, very knowledgeable and confident in what we do. The things we need to improve on are more updates and better communication on service during COVID- 19, send more resources that patient can have access to anytime and the letters sent were difficult to understand.

Following the feedback we are now offering video consultations instead of telephone appointments if these are what a patient prefers, a weighing service team that are available for patients who are housebound so that they can be weighed, we reviewed our letters to try and make sure they can be easily read in the future and a small number of face to face appointments available from October 2020 when needed.
