NHS Staff lend a hand for the DIY SOS Children in Need special
Staff from Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust volunteered their support to the DIY SOS team to build a new home for local charity Getaway Girls. The DIY SOS Children in Need special episode will show Nick Knowles and his team building a brand-new home for Getaway Girls in just nine days – in one of their biggest challenges yet.
The NHS volunteers work for the MindMate Support Team who offer emotional wellbeing support for young people up to 19 years old in education settings across Leeds and often refer young people to Getaway Girls for further support.
Getaway Girls delivers support to around 800 girls and young women across the city, while also providing activities such as residential trips, music classes and sport. The charity helps girls develop confidence and improve self-esteem, supports their mental health, raising their aspirations for the future.
The new building is in Seacroft and will provide a much-needed safe space for vulnerable girls and young women living in Leeds. It includes offices, a creche, activity spaces, a music and media studio, counselling rooms and a garden.
Kate Baker, MindMate Support Team Manager, who volunteered to help with the build said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to support our local partner. Getaway Girls is a great charity that supports and empowers girls and young women and gives them opportunities.
It was inspiring to see so many people give up their free time and work together to support a worthy cause. My colleagues from both Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust found it physically tough, it was hard work, but we all came together and worked as a team.”
